Hellboy was brought to earth as an infant by Nazi Occultists. He is a demon and his real name is Anung Un Rama (meaning “Beast of the Apocalypse). Hellboy was discovered by the United States Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (BPRD for short) formed by the Allied Forces.

As he grew to adulthood he became a large red-skinned demon with a tail, horns, an oversized hand made of stone and cloven hooves for feet. To enable him to pass through doors more easily he actually files the horns down to leave the stumps which are his trademark. He becomes the primary agent for the BPRD working along side human and non human agents.

Hellboy makes a visit to Bromwich church and discovers that he was conceived by a witch and a demon prince around three hundred years ago, making him much older than he thought he was.

He has many special abilities that no human will ever possess. Included are things like the “healing factor”. Being shot in the chest many times before destroying the weapon? Impaled with a sword, crushed by boulders, mauled by wolves – none of these an issue to Hellboy, whereas they would kill a human. In addition to the natural abilities he has a wealth of items in his utility belt (Buzz Lightyear anyone?) and jacket that can be used against many supernatural entities. He does admit to being an awful shot with a gun though so he prefers to fight hand to hand.

On the subject of hands, his right hand is commonly known as “the right hand of doom” mainly due to the fact it is a large forearm and hand which appear to be made of red stone. Being able to catch a fly with it is fine, but because of its large size, Hellboy would much rather use his weapons left handed, as this makes them easier to operate as that hand is normal. When used to punch an enemy the right hand is basically a sledgehammer, and he feels no pain in that hand.

In the films (yes, there has currently been two, and talk of a third at time of writing) Hellboy travels around and both the first two differ in their plot lines. The second film being more based around the folklore of Hellboy with heavy European influences.
