In a world not unlike ours some people have superhuman abilities. Two of these people are Mr Incredible, who is extremely strong and Elastigirl who can stretch her body into almost any shape. Mr Incredible has a young fan called Buddy, who invents lots of different gadgets and longs to be Mr Incredibles sidekick. However, Mr Incredible insists on working alone. In the city of Municiberg we see a busy day of crime fighting and the wedding of Mr Incredible and Elastigirl, who decide to call themselves Bob and Helen Parr. Soon afterwards lawsuits from bystanders generate a political backlash, meaning that the superheroes are forced to stop saving the world and live normal civilian lives.
Fifteen years later Bob and Helen are living happily in Metroville. They have three children. The son Dash can run faster than the eye can see, teen daughter Violet can turn invisible and create protective shields. They are forced to hide their abilities due to the law passed some years earlier. The baby Jack, appears to be a normal child. Bob has gained a lot of weight and is frustrated in his job within an insurance company. He regularly sneaks out to fight crime with his friend Frozone.
One day Bob looses his temper with his boss for refusing to let him save an innocent crime victim and hits him. He wants to tell Helen he has been fired, however before he can he finds a video message from “Mirage” offering him a large amount of money to stop an out of control robot on an island. Bob accepts, is flown to the island and defeats the robot. He returns to his family and commences working out to get back into shape, he takes his old suit to be repaired by Edna Mole a renowned superhero suit maker. She makes him a new suit (in Red).
“Mirage” actually works for Mr Incredible’s old fan Buddy, who is now calling himself “Syndrome” and wishes to avenge himself against Mr Incredible and the rest of the superheroes for shunning him. He has already killed many supers by luring them to the island to fight the robots and has been perfecting it to defeat Bob.
On his next trip to the island Bob is nearly defeated by the new advance robot and only just escapes. Meanwhile, Helen discovers the repair on his old suit and visits Edna, who gives her supersuits for her and the children. They fly to the island to help save Bob and defeat Syndrome.
