A sudden explosion at the Xavier mansion leads the X-men to think an unknown assassin is targeting telepaths. This means that the X-men are confused and break up to go their own separate ways. This leaves the once highly-respected band of mutant peace-keepers out of commission. A lot of the former X-men have also lost their faith in the abilities of the old team, so seemingly drop out of circulation. Iceman goes back to live with his parents in the suburbs;Storm goes back to Africa where she originated. A little while later, human protesters who are complaining about mutants being amongst them and are apparently concerned for human safety means that the government forms an organisation to capture the mutants. During this action two of the former X-men (Wolverine and Beast) join together in the hope of finding the others before the government and with a view to bringing the old team back together. As the team is getting back together and returning to its former strength they realise that they will need a telepath to operate the machinery to enable them to locate the far flung members of the old team.
This problem does not last too long however, as a beautiful former head of a mutant school (now closed) appears on the doorstep and makes them an offer they can’t really refuse. Admit her to the X-men team and she will use her telepathic skills to locate the missing members. She proves very successful in this and locates the rest of the team and they hope they will join them in the newly reformed team.
The X-men overcome a lot of problems and obstacles whilst trying to reach their goal of finding Jean Grey and the cause of the explosion at the mansion. This turns out to be Jean’s fault, who accidentally managed to release the power of the Phoenix Force which had been dormant for many many years inside her subconscious mind. She had been trying to prevent a psychic attack by the former head of the mutant school, who is in fact a double agent working for the Inner Circle.
This Inner Circle wanted the power of the Phoenix Force, so had arranged to abduct Jean from the mansion where she was protected, but also to destroy it so that it could not destroy earth. The double agent discovers that the Inner Circle actually want to control the Force and have it do their bidding so they can control the world. Knowing this to be wrong, she betrays them by destroying the force herself.
